Sitting down together to enjoy a meal is sometimes hard to do, but it is worthwhile in the long run. My husband and I have not had a completely quiet meal with our children since 5 years ago when our first one was born. Kids and meals are far from being a quiet and relaxing combination. However we keep at it hoping  for our first truly quiet meal together.

In our family the meal that we all eat together is usually breakfast. Sometimes it is supper, but this happens mostly on weekends. During the other meals it is just me and the kids as my husband is usually at work. However, during those times too I try to sit down and eat at the same time as the kids. This is not easy and I spend a part of the meal attending to their needs.

By sitting down and eating together, kids learn that eating is (or at least should be) an enjoyable time. They learn that we respect food and our bodies, so we take our time to eat. They learn that we eat together because we are a family and we enjoy spending time with each other. They also see what we eat and, by the power of example, they might even follow in our eating habits’ steps.

Next week we will have a look at how we can make meals more enjoyable for us and our children.
