From my experience, all of the above are great for helping kids and adults to have normal bowel movements, however spinach did not work that well for us in the past. Maybe because of its higher content of iron, it actually has the opposite effect. Although we all like spinach, we have to make sure we we add some other fibers to the meal and drink plenty of water or freshly squeezed apple juice.
That’s a good point, Georgi. Even if spinach has a high content of fiber (and water as I mentioned here), it can cause constipation in some children (and some adults). We are all different and we need to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables in order to find out what works for each of us. But, as always, encouraging our children to drink water is the first and foremost thing that we need to do if we want our children to have regular bowel movements.
In terms of juice, freshly squeezed apple juice is a good choice, as is orange juice. They don’t have fiber anymore, but they still contain water (and fruit sugar) that can act as a natural laxative. Prune juice is another good choice, especially first thing in the morning. If we stew the prunes in hot water and then mash them, we get a thin smoothie that has not only water, but also fiber. Another great natural laxative.
